As you may know, Radon (Rn) is a naturally occurring radioactive gas present in trace amounts everywhere. This is an environmental exposure to radiation that can be drastically reduced and minimized in your home. Usually when someone is purchasing a house they also choose to do a Radon test. However, more and more, homeowners are requesting Radon tests in homes they already live in. By far, the best way to test for Radon is using Electronic Radon Monitors (ERM’s) that are downloaded on-site as opposed to the old style canister and vial type tests that are left for a period of 48-96 hours, some can run as long as 90 days, and then sent out to a lab for analysis. I use only Sun Nuclear Electronic Radon Monitors and other diagnostic equipment that my company has purchased to do the most accurate and complete testing. This ensures the quickest and most dependable results. I am also certified as a Radon Measurement Technician and a Radon Mitigation Specialist by the National Environmental Health Association and National Radon Proficiency Program. My company regularly installs well designed, high quality, highly effective, Radon Mitigation Systems.
It is imperative that mitigation systems be installed only by highly qualified individuals as a poorly designed or improperly installed system can not only be ineffective but can DRASTICALLY INCREASE RADON LEVELS in your home.BE CERTAIN that the person on-site personally performing the Radon Testing or Radon Mitigation is theactual person certified to do itand not simply working for a company who holds the license. Additionally, all associated electrical work MUST be completed only by a Massachusetts Licensed Electrician (not by the way, someone who calls themselves an “electrical engineer” as there is a local mitigator who makes this claim. This is misleading and wrong) The majority of Radon Mitigators Illegally perform their own electrical work in YOUR home. All of the electrical portions of the systems that we install are only and without exception completed by a Massachusetts Licensed Electrician that I have on staff.
The U.S. Surgeon General and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends testing all homes for Radon and Mitigating those with an average concentration withof 4 picoCuries per liter of air (4.0 pCi/L) or higher. More recently, the EPA has stated that people should “consider fixing their homes” when Radon levels are between 2 and 4 pCi/L but the “Action Level” currently remains 4 pCi/L. Even if your test result is below 4.0 pCi/L the EPA suggests re-testing every 2 years.
World Health Organization and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC):
Radon is classified as a Class A known human carcinogen according to the World Health Organizations International Agency for Research on Cancer. Radon comes from radium that is found in the ground everywhere. This gas collects in homes and buildings and forms Radon Decay Products (RDP’s) which mostly attach to dust particles in the air. Inhalation of these Radon Decay Products results in the deposition of energy (alpha particles) in surface tissues of the lung. This is the largest source of Radiation Dose to an average person and Radon is a known cause of lung cancer in humans. In keeping with normal radiation safety practices for minimizing all sources of radiation dose, the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists and the EPA recommends testing of all homes and taking action to reduce radon levels to at least below 4.0 pCi/L with latest documented EPA recommendation being that people should “consider fixing” homes with a radon level of between 2-4 pCi/L. THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION ACTION LEVEL HAS NOW BEEN LOWERED TO 2.7 PCI/L.
